Is it "tangled" poofy--it could just need a brushing. Of course, if you've used a lot of product in it or worn it a lot (especially in hot weather), or even if it has just gotten dusty from storage, it could indeed need a wash.
CAUTION!! THE FOLLOWING IS FOR UNSTYLED/EASY TO RESTYLE WIGS! If you have an updo or ponytail wig, you will have to handle the cleaning a bit differently.
The thing about wigs is that you have to be very careful washing them or tangles will tangle worse. Run a sinkful of warm water (slightly warmer than lukewarm) and squeze in about a tablespoon of mild shampoo (like children's formula, but Suave will do nicely). Put the wig in until it is fully submerged and swish it gently for a minute or two. Let it sit longer if you used things that need more time to dissolve, like a full can of hairspray.
After washing, run another sinkful of slightly cooler water and rinse the wig the same way you washed it. If you want, you can squeeze a glob of conditioner in--it will make the wig nice and shiny when it dries.
The next step is very important--DO NOT BRUSH OR COMB THE WIG UNTIL IT IS FULLY DRY!!!!! Wigs are very fragile when they are wet, and combing/brushing will pull out the fibers more easily,
So after the wig is FULLY dry, comb it out gently with a wide-tooth comb and/or a detangler brush (the kind with the teeth instead of the bristles). Of course, if you had any kind of styling in the wig, the product holding it together will have washed out, so you will have to re-style it into whatever spikes were there after combing it out. __________________ Never cause more mischief than that which is necessary for success.

Reply with quote | #4 | You would air-dry it. It should take a few hours, so it's not something I would recommend to do at the last second. It's definitely something you would do the night before. __________________ Never cause more mischief than that which is necessary for success.

Reply with quote | #6 | When you're wearing it, you should constantly fingercomb it. And carry around a comb so you can maintain it periodically. __________________ /SoyCon 2009 Cosplay/

Reply with quote | #7 | For the few wigs I have, after I take them off, I hang them on the wig head and brush it out lightly with a wig brush. Then I just leave it be.
If you want to put something on it, wig spray is good for sheen and for controlling those stray fibers.
Most times I try to remove any styling so that the whole wig is relaxed rather than parts of it.
These are my tips
